What Are Glass Sex Toys?
Before we get into the many reasons we will always shout the praises of glass sex toys, what even are glass sex toys?
Glass sex toys are sex toys that are made up of, well, glass; specifically, borosilicate glass. There are a huge variety of glass sex toys out there on the market, from double-ended glass dildos to classic glass butt plugs all the way to
What kind of glass are glass sex toys made of?
Does the idea of a glass sex toy freak you out? Unlike glass that simple housewares are made out of, sex toy glass is ultra-hard. Glass toys are made of borosilicate glass, the same material that Pyrex food storage containers are made of. Borosilicate glass goes through a special heating process that further hardens the glass so that it’s safe to use internally. Borosilicate glass is very durable, medical-grade, lead-free, and non-toxic, so when you buy a glass sex toy, you’re really getting the best of the best of material options.
Stainless steel sex toys are another one of our favorite alternative toy materials, also offering non-toxic, body-safe, and even hypoallergenic playtime opportunities!
How Are Glass Sex Toys Different?
Glass sex toys are totally different from silicone toys in that they are very heavy and smooth, while silicone toys are typically fairly lightweight and don’t have quite as smooth surfaces. Glass toys, just like stainless steel toys, use the power of gravity to deliver waves of pleasurable sensations, whereas silicone toys are easier to move around typically require you to do all the movements yourself (thrusting, grinding, etc.)!
Silicone toys are:
- Able to be very soft
- Incompatible with silicone-based lube
- One of the cheaper sex toy materials
- Easier to find in many variations, shapes, sizes, etc.
Glass toys are:
- Hard & solid
- Compatible with any type of lube
- Typically more expensive than silicone toys
- Fairly easy to find in many variations, sizes, textures, etc.
How Do Glass Sex Toys Feel?
One of the main draws of glass sex toys is their weight and the fact that they use the power of gravity to pleasure their users! They’re firm, hard, and offer super solid stimulation & penetration, which may be a little bit of a shock to folks who are used to silicone toys and haven’t branched out to stainless steel or glass before. So don’t worry if you’re a little shocked at first by the weightiness of glass toys – once you find your groove and figure out how you like to use them, it’ll be hard to go back to anything lighter!
If you aren’t experimenting with any purposeful temperature play and just use your glass toy right out of the box, it may feel fairly cold at first due to the fact that it’s made of, well, glass. Don’t worry – it’ll warm up as soon as you start using it, and you can put it in a bowl of hot water if you want it to be extra warm right away!
Glass toys are sooo smooth and feel so yummy, since the entire surface is shiny, glossy, and slick. Trust us – you’ll known what we mean as soon as you start using one.
Benefits of Glass Sex Toys
There’s no drag/friction
Since glass is a super duper smooth material (duh), glass toys are a perfect way to experiment with more adventurous texture without having the extra drag or friction that silicone toys sometimes have. This is especially true if you use lube for extra-slippery fun, but even without lube, glass toys will be MUCH smoother to use and insert than silicone toys.
They’re super fun for temperature play
Like stainless steel toys, glass toys are also great for temperature play if you want to add some fun new sensations into your solo or partnered sex! The glass that these toys are made of is excellent at sustaining extreme temperatures and is pretty resistant to thermal shock when heated, so you won’t have to worry about shattering your glass sex toys!
How to heat up glass sex toys: Submerge your toy in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes until it’s heated to your liking.
How to cool down glass sex toys: Submerge your toy in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes until you’re happy with how cold it is, or stick it in a fridge/freezer for a couple of minutes.
They’re easy to clean
Just like stainless steel toys, glass sex toys are SUPER easy to clean. Glass sex toys are non-porous, meaning they don’t have any holes where bacteria can settle. No need to buy a toy-specific cleaner – to sanitize a glass sex toy, simply submerge it in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes and it’ll be good to go!
They’re compatible with all lubes
Where silicone toys fall short, glass toys excel: they’re compatible with any + all types of lube! Use your favorite oil-based, water-based, silicone-based, or hybrid lube for some super slippery fun – and be sure to always use lube during anal play with any type of toy. They’re easy to care for
Glass is one of the easiest materials to care for when it comes to sex toys. Silicone sex toys require more cleaning to kill germs (such as this Dame Hand & Vibe Cleaner), as well as upkeep if you want to keep the surface super silky and smooth using a toy powder like this one. Glass toys, on the other hand, simply need to be sanitized after each use (see above), and stored in a cozy place such as a closed box, bag, or that secret drawer in your nightstand.
They come in a variety of textures
One of the reasons that glass toys are such a blast is that they can be made in various textures - everything from nubbly, tentacle-like dildos to anal beads can be made with glass. We definitely recommend playing around and trying new textures when it comes to glass toys because the options are truly endless. Don’t be afraid to branch out from the normal textures you’re used to in silicone toys – you may just end up finding something you unexpectedly love!
They’re aesthetically pleasing
Because they can be made in so many different ways, glass toys are super aesthetically pleasing. Will you have nasty, delicious sex with it, or leave it on your coffee table (or both)?! Only time will tell.
One of the BIG benefits of borosilicate glass (the glass that these toys are made of) is that it’s super resistant to thermal expansion as we mentioned in the temperature play section above. If you’re not into that nerdy language, it basically means that your toy will NOT crack under extreme temperature changes like normal glass. It’s also much stronger than regular glass & way less susceptible to fractures in general, so if you drop it during playtime, it’s likely it’ll be just fine!
They’re non-porous & hypoallergenic
Finally, borosilicate glass is both non-porous and hypoallergenic, meaning it’s super safe for your body. Non-porous means that the surface of the glass is extremely smooth & doesn’t have pores (holes) to allow bacteria, liquid, or air in – which is why they’re very easy to clean compared to porous toys (which really aren’t that safe to use in general)!
